Conversational AI: From Customer Support to Intelligent Learning Companions
The past decade has seen a rapid advancement in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to help computers better understand and generate human language. This led to the rising popularity of conversational interfaces in mainstream applications. Popularly known as chatbots, these technologies allow human users to carry on natural-like conversations with the computer while performing some tasks. While commercial applications have embraced the use of chatbots, children comprise a sector of society who can benefit from interacting with these technologies to enhance their language acquisition, literacy skills and emotion development. In this presentation, I will give an overview of the AI + language research landscape, and then describe our conversational storytelling agent that can support children in the construction of stories.
