Studies on World Englishes and Corpus Linguistics

The presentations in this panel revolve around corpus-based investigations of the grammatical features of World Englishes, in general, and of Philippine English, in particular. The first two papers deal with thirteen available components of the International Corpus of English (ICE) on World Englishes (both inner and outer circles of English). The first paper deals with linking adverbials while the second with multi-word verbs (phrasal verbs, prepositional verbs, and phrasal prepositional verbs). The third paper describes the conventions of writing in terms of the grammatical, rhetorical, and discoursal features of master’s theses, dissertations, and research articles in the Philippine context. The fourth and fifth papers feature a 1.5M-word newly-built corpus of academic outputs in SHS. One focuses on subjuncts while the other on multi-word verbs. All presentations highlight the use of corpus in their studies.
