Dr. Ethel Ong is an Associate Professor of the College of Computer Studies at De La Salle University where she also serves as the Director for Senior High School Engagements. She conducts capacity training on STEM-based research proposal writing and research ethics, and acts as one of the instructional coaches for Guide for Teachers without Borders. As a senior researcher at the University’s Center for Language Technologies, she manages research teams engaged in the development of computer systems that can understand and generate natural language text, focusing primarily on stories, narrative-based learning environments, and conversational interfaces. She has a funded research with the Department of Science and Technology to give conversational agents the ability to engage in storytelling with their human users, particularly children and adolescents, as a mechanism to develop language and literacy skills, emotional intelligence and mental health awareness.
